About Spot the Spot

Empowering you, your doctor, and loved ones

Spot the Spot™ was created by Dermpath Diagnostics to help you learn how to protect and inspect your skin. By preventing or more quickly identifying skin-related conditions, we can put a stop to increasing skin cancer rates.

When you become a spotter, you know how to work more closely with your dermatologist to care for your own skin. You can also act as a spotter and educator for friends and family. What you notice could save their lives.

What is dermatopathology?

Specialty to diagnose skin disorders

If your dermatologist suspects you have a skin disorder, the next step is to work with a dermatopathologist to confirm a diagnosis.

A dermatopathologist is a highly trained physician who specializes in diagnosing disorders of the skin under a microscope. It's a combination of dermatology (the diagnosis and treatment of skin, hair, and nail disorders) and pathology (identification of disorders microscopically).
Dermatopathologist: Diagnoses skin cancer by examining your tissue in a microscope and analyzing your medical information.
Diagnosing your skin tissue is not a typical or simple laboratory test—it is a personal, consultative service. To make a definitive diagnosis, a dermatopathologist makes microscopic observations of your skin tissue and analyzes your medical information.

You and your dermatologist are smart to rely on a dermatopathologist for cases like melanoma and other skin cancers, as well as immunologic, infectious, and pediatric disorders. Since a misdiagnosis of certain skin disorders can be fatal, it is critical that you and your dermatologist receive the most accurate and timely diagnosis.
